Nurses have a unique opportunity to work as a social change agent. As a result of working within many different aspects of society, nurses can utilize their skills to advocate for and support social change for the benefit of their patients and the public.
This Assignment allows you the opportunity to explore social change topics and develop an informational type of infographic to explore the nurses’ role; the connection to and bias; and how the topic may be addressed.

- Review the Learning Resources presented in the module. Pay particular attention to the Learning Resources that mention social change topics for your topic selection.
- Select a social change topic that is connected to your community, your life, and/or your work setting. Identify an issue connected to the selected social change topic.
- Consider the impact of identity and bias on decision making on the selected social change topic.

The Assignment
Step 1: Preparing for the Infographic
- You will need to choose a “social change” topic. There are some great resources for this within the Module 1 learning materials. Social change topic examples include, but are not limited to, access to healthcare, economic inequality, racism, mental health, abortion, food insecurity, and climate change.
Understand the Questions:
Start by carefully reviewing the following five questions you need to address. Ensure you understand what each question is asking and think about how you can organize your answers visually.
- Clearly identify your selected social change topic.
- Describe issues connected to the selected social change topic.
- Explain how individuals and organizations might already be working on addressing issues related to your social change topic.
- Explain the role of the nurse or change agent in effecting social change on the selected social change topic. Be specific.
- Discuss how identity and bias may influence decision making as it relates to the selected social change topic.
Step 2: Creating the Infographic. Some of the most popular are:
- CanvaLinks to an external site.

- PiktochartLinks to an external site.
- Sign Up: You may be asked to sign up. The free version is sufficient.
- Choose a Template: Once logged in, search for “Infographic” in the template search bar. Choose a template that suits your project or start from scratch if you prefer.
- Design the Infographic:
- Title and Introduction: Include a brief title at the top of the infographic that tells the reader what it’s about.
Sections for Each Question: Divide the infographic into sections. Each section should correspond to one of the five questions, and you should provide clear answers. - Visual Enhancements: Use tools to add icons, illustrations, shapes, and colors to make the infographic engaging. Keep the design clean and easy to follow.
- Limit Text: Avoid long paragraphs and keep text concise and to one page.
- Cite and Reference: Provide at least one basic reference and citation. The citation should include the author and date of publication, and the reference should include the author’s name, year, and source title per APA 7th formatting. As the course progresses, you’ll learn specific APA formatting and citation rules in detail.
- Title and Introduction: Include a brief title at the top of the infographic that tells the reader what it’s about.
- Download the Infographic: When you’re satisfied with your design, “Download” the infographic to your computer. In Canva, tap the “Share” button in the top right corner and select “Download.” Be sure to download in a file format that is either PNG or PDF – typically best for infographics and compatible within the course.
